How Much Weight Can You Load on Your Car Roof? A Safety Guide

You’ve installed the roof bars, secured the roof box, and you’re ready to hit the road. However, before loading everything you need for your trip, it’s crucial to understand a frequently overlooked detail: the maximum roof load of your vehicle.

Exceeding the allowed limit or poorly distributing weight can compromise vehicle stability, increase braking distances, and make driving less safe, especially when turning or during sudden stops. Knowing the correct load allows you to travel safely, protect your car, and make the most of your roof bars and box.

How to Calculate the Actual Payload

To determine how much weight you can actually transport on the roof, you need three pieces of information:

  • Maximum Roof Load of the Car
This is indicated in the vehicle’s owner’s manual. For most cars, it ranges from 50 to 75 kg, while some SUVs can go up to 100 kg.
  • Weight of the Roof Bars
A kit of aluminum bars generally weighs between 4 and 5 kg.
  • Weight of the Empty Roof Box
A box of about 400 liters has an average weight of around 15 kg.

Practical Example

If the maximum roof load of your car is 75 kg: 75 kg (roof load) − 5 kg (roof bars) − 15 kg (roof box) = 55 kg of payload

This means that you can transport a maximum of 55 kg of luggage inside the box.

How to Properly Distribute Weight

Safety depends not only on the total weight but also on how it is distributed within the box.

  • Place Heavier Items in the Center
Hard suitcases, trolleys, or heavy equipment should be positioned in the center of the box, aligned with the roof bars, to distribute the load evenly.
  • Arrange Lighter Items at the Ends
Sleeping bags, jackets, tents, or soft bags can be placed at the front and back of the box.
  • Always Secure the Load
Use the internal straps to secure the luggage and prevent movement during travel. In case of sudden braking, an unsecured load can damage the box or compromise vehicle stability.
